Busan Beach Day

Since our holiday was only 7 days of the possible 8 we could have Lee and I woke ourselves up early and headed to Busan for the day. As I’ve mentioned before I really wanted to live in Busan when I moved to Korea but ended up in Daegu so I savour any day I can sneak there.
Luckily for me it’s only a cheap train ride away so spending the day there was easier than expected.
We hopped on the slow train and before we knew it we were wandering the boiling streets of Busan.

Like smart people we decided to hike to the beach in the mid day sun (?) but it was actually really fun. We decided to go to Songjeong  beach instead of Haeundae as everyone heads to Haeundae and it’s always stupidly busy.
The hike was one we found on this website:

And although you can do it in flip flops it is easier if you have shoes.

I found a bridge troll

WE DID IT!

Drying chillie

Once we arrived on the beach we laid ourselves down and instantly fell asleep in the shade. We must have needed the rest because 3 hours later we woke up to a cooler but still lovely Busan day. We read our books and I took a dip in the freezing sea.

A very girlie book is always needed for the summer.

Then we sampled the delights of café street. To say that it’s a street of cafes really doesn’t sum up how ridiculously full of cafes this road is. I counted about 32 coffee shops and not one 7-11 or anything else in sight.
This did give me the perfect opportunity to let Lee experience PatBinSu which is a Korean dessert. This is a new discovery for me and I’m in love with it. All dieters in the UK should get involved as it has almost no calories, takes stupidly long to eat and is easy to make.
It is literally a bowl of ice flakes with different types on toppings. Normally always red bean which is a very sweet (not quite chocolate/not quite jam) mixture. This is followed by cereal, rice cake, ice cream and sometimes fruit.
Ironically tomato is a rare ingredient that springs up from time to time. Unfortunately as it is the only food Lee doesn’t like it was bound to make an appearance on our dessert. He soldiered through and although he may not be a convert I was even more hooked.

After a lazy wander we headed to the top of the pier park and watched the sunset over the beach. I even had a go and the stupidly heavy and crazy Hula Hoops that are laying around for people to exercise with. I am ashamed to say that Hula Hooping may be one of my only skills but this was really hard. I want one for the house (but its bigger than my flat)

Wishing stones. People leave piles of them to make a wish

Lee's new favourite food...should be horrible but is actually great!

We headed back into town and took a stroll through China Town. This little area made me so happy since I have been craving actual Chinese food. Koreans do their own version of Chinese food which is a little odd and sometimes tasteless, although their version of sweet and sour pork is worthy of any meal.

We were running a little too late to stick around but we did get to see the great number of Russian prostitutes (?) as well as sample some chicken and beer.

The day was given an extra bit of sparkle when we witnessed the fountain light show. I think Lee thought I was crazy but I loved it. Especially the Barbie girl number. Who doesn’t love watching fountains and lasers dance to music I ask you???

It was a great day and lovely to know that Busan is so close we can pop back there any time which is a good thing since my Busan ‘To Do’ list is very long.

Discovery of the week: Elementary school students.

Discovery of the week: Elementary school students.

Since it is vacation time for my middle school I agreed to help out a friend and be part of his summer camp. This sounded like so much fun that I couldn’t wait. I was allowed to teach 3 grades, 3 times over 3 days. The first day was ‘Airport’ so I had my suitcase, passport and travel equipment ready to show the class. The lovely co teachers at my friend Patrick’s school (and I mean lovely) thought I just carried a very big bag around with me.
What the kids would be like was a mystery to me. My students are about 5 years older in some cases and definitely have a lower level of English. When I stepped into my first class I was greeted with 10 beaming faces. Each student was a pleasure. They had such lovely personalities. Each student was enthusiastic and ready to learn. This theme continued through out the day. The 4th grade class was so cute it broke my heart. They were just adorable. I was in love.

The next day we had a lot of fun with a senses lesson. This meant I was allowed to feed those lemons and popcorn while making their poor little noses smell perfume and coffee. The over stimulisation may have been too much for them as they were all hyper messes for the other teachers….oophs!
The last day we had an animation class. This is very close to my heart as its been my career path since I was 7. The kids reacted great to it including one student who genuinely wanted to become and animator. I gave them the task of creating a character and then drawing that same character doing different movements we had learnt. I was extremely impressed. Their drawing skills and imagination was shockingly great.

Airport class, students filling their passports

Senses class. Creating a face.

The girls decided their face would be me :D

Each day went so quick that it was hard to pause for breath. Every day was summed up by sitting down with the other teachers for a delicious Korean meal.
I can honestly say I didn’t want to leave.
Before saying goodbye I had a wall of 4th graders run at me to take pictures. I felt like a celebrity. I have never had that kind of recognition for any job I’ve done let alone school teacher so it was a shock to the system but one I’d definitely welcome again.
Thank you Janggi elementary school for having me. I miss you already xxxx

So long Thailand

Goodbye Bangkok

Our finally evening in Bangkok was a little more relaxed than the first. I ate at a food market (Vietnamese food this time to get myself excited for our winter vacation) and Lee being the naughty man he is encourages a shopping spree like no other. In Thailand the clothes are phenomenal and so cheap that it’s rude not to buy anything.
I hate shopping for myself so It took a lot of coaxing but I left with two new dresses, a top and a great pair of shoes. All under 20 pound.

This building was called 'um tower' and looked far too much like someone pulling their butt cheeks apart. Yes we are still children!

Water taxi stop

Cute Thai lady

lovely Vietnamese food

Bladerunner

infamous Thailand toasties

We also stocked up on all necessary items that we have been missing in Korea. (A lot of this was gotten at the Tescos on Koh Samui…that’s right A TESCOS UK PEOPLE!)
It mostly consisted of American and English chocolate as well as antiperspirant which is stupidly expensive in Korea as well as some ‘do it yourself’ Thai food packets. I definitely have the cooking bug after our trip.
goodies!
Thailands King is every where you look in Thailand.
more Goodies

New shoes

We were a little worried when we saw the hour long queue at the airport the next day but without bags to check we were sneakily allowed to skip the line.

From then it was a restful wait in duty free where I was allowed to buy something I’ve been dreaming of for a long time.
Mac Ruby Woo red lipstick!!!! Half price of the UK duty free…thank you Thailand.

A plane ride and 2 films later we had a short stop over in Taiwan.

Beautiful Taiwan

Disney goodness!

Seeing Taiwan instantly perked these weary travelers up. It was so clean and very beautiful. We know that they need English teachers too so it definitely gave us something to consider. Especially after seeing the incredible Disney store they had.
But we couldn’t stay and we were soon on the KTX back to lovely Daegu.

It was a whirlwind 11 days and I loved every moment of it.
I can’t believe we have already been here long enough to be having summer vacation but I am already counting down the days to September’s holiday when we will celebrate Korean Thanksgiving in the only way possible….in TOKYO!!!

So after 3 countries, 5 cities, 2 Islands, 1 Jungle, 5 planes, 12 trains, 3 ferries, 3 speed boats, 4 buses, 4 shuttles, 2 Tuk Tuks, 1 canon, a few trucks and countless taxies we are home. Safe, sound and ready for bed.
Good night everyone and happy
